Social Media Updates and Marketing Moments – 10th January 2025

10 January 2025

Remember when we used to pop up every week with a handy little recap of the latest news and updates from the world of social media? And then we disappeared for a while…or longer…. Sorry about that! But the good news is, we’re bringing the weekly round-up back!

So welcome back to your new and improved weekly dose of marketing updates. Whether you’re here for the hottest industry news, standout campaign inspiration, or top tips to help your business really stand out, you’re in the right place.

Sit back, grab your left over Christmas chocolate, and let’s dive into the wonderful week of marketing, with the sprinkle of wit and dash of creativity you’d expect from the M.A.D team!

This week’s social media shake ups

Meta’s controversial shake-up

Meta is reportedly waving goodbye to fact checkers on Facebook, Threads, and Instagram! Instead, they’re placing their bets on community notes to “allow more speech” (cue the debate). Oh, and expect more political content recommendations to pop up in your feed too.

While some believe that the move could lead to a more open platform, others (quite rightly) fear it could lead to a surge in misinformation and hate speech.

Instagram’s latest experiment: trial reels

Instagram is spicing things up with trial reels. This new feature lets users share Reels with non-followers only. So, if you’ve been wanting to try out new ideas for new audiences or niches, this is the update for you!

Perfect for reaching new audiences, but will it stick? Watch this space…

LinkedIn’s video glow-up

Videos on LinkedIn are getting a promotion – literally. Keep an eye on your main feed where videos will soon appear in larger panels. Bigger, bolder, and impossible to ignore, the platform’s video-first strategy is clearly here to stay – make sure you adjust your content calendar accordingly!

Marketing moments of the week

Aldi’s snowed-in care packages

When life gives you snow, Aldi gives you Malbec! During a snowstorm that trapped guests at Tan Hill Inn, Britain’s highest pub, Aldi swooped in on a snow plough with the perfect care package. Think sausages, board games, de-icer, and of course, Malbec wine – everything you need for a cosy night in. This clever stunt proved once again that Aldi know how to turn a disastrous moment into a memorable experience.

Not sure hiring a snow plough is quite in  your budget? Don’t worry, the learning from this isn’t that you need to take on the weather, but rather that quick thinking and reactivity is always good marketing move. Keep your eyes and mind open and look for opportunities your brand can jump on to make an impact.

For example, snow headed your way? Fitness brands can seize the moment by encouraging followers to stay active and safe indoors, away from the snow and ice. Share quick, equipment-free workout videos, fitness tips, and fun challenges that people can easily do in the comfort of their living rooms.

Your weekly marketing must-do!

Ready to level up your marketing game? Each week, we’ll share an expert tip to keep your strategy sharp and your results even sharper. This week, it’s inspired by everyone’s favourite December moment, Spotify Wrapped.

A wrap is for life, not just for Christmas

We’ve all seen it. We’ve all shared it. We’ve all seen the brands jumping on the trend. But content like Spotify Wrapped doesn’t have to be reserved for the end of the year – it’s a great formula for creating relatable, milestone-driven content that your audience can connect with, no matter the season.

Why not borrow the style to share fun, engaging updates throughout the year, such as:

These posts not only celebrate your wins but also reflect on your progress in a fun, digestible way, just like the Spotify Wrapped experience. And the best part? You don’t have to wait until December – you can do this quarterly, monthly, or weekly, to keep your audience engaged, reflect on your growth, and celebrate your customers year-round.

That’s all for this week! We’ll be back next week with more insights, updates, and tips to keep your marketing on track.
