Weekly Roundup 14 February 2025 – The Duolingo Special Edition!

14 February 2025

Hello Duolingo fans and social media sleuths!

This week, our favourite language-learning app stirred up quite the conversation by axing its beloved unhinged mascot and Gen Z icon, Duo the owl. Yes, you read that right – Duo has been given the boot in a dramatic fashion, and the fallout on social media has been nothing short of a frenzy!

So, in honour of the iconic green owl, in this week’s roundup, we’re diving into the drama, the memes, and all the heated reactions from fans and critics alike. What does this bold move mean for the brand’s future? And what can we learn for our own marketing strategies?

Grab your Valentine’s chocolate, settle in, and let’s decode this unexpected twist together!

So, what actually happened?

We’re not sure how ANYONE has missed the drama, but if you’re not in the loop and you’re too embarrassed to ask (we’ve all been there), here’s the lowdown…

It all started on Tuesday (11th February), when the brand posted the following announcement on their social channels:

And on TikTok, they shared a clip of the owl being carried in a coffin before being whisked away in a pick-up truck:

@duolingo RIP DUO #duolingo ♬ Dixon Dallas Good Lookin – Jake Hill

They even hosted a funeral for Duo, asking people to do a Duolingo lesson in lieu of sending flowers.

As you’d expect, the internet went WILD as news spread. Is he really dead? How did he die? WHY?! And…what does Dua Lipa have to do with it?! Why is everyone talking about Drake?! SO. MANY. QUESTIONS!!

How did social media react to the death of Duo?

The online response has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. But, interestingly, while users are buzzing with conspiracy theories and humorous takes, it’s mostly other brands joining the conversation. And, in fact, many of the responses from users have been related to the news that Duolingo has been replacing workers with AI 😬.

Some say this ties in to the Dead Internet Theory, which is a whole other kettle of fish but makes an interesting read, we’d recommend starting here if you want to find out more.

Here are just some of the brand responses we’ve spotted:

Even the World Health Organisation has got in on the action:

So what can brands learn from this?

You might be surprised to hear that the main takeaway from this on-going saga isn’t that we should all immediately kill off our brand mascots or start beef with Drake. In fact, it’s not even to do with this specific stunt.

So what is it? We’re pleased you asked…

The real thing that makes Duolingo’s marketing stand out most isn’t the owl (R.I.P), or the trends, or the jokes…it’s the fact that the social team behind the account has the freedom to share this type content. It’s a lesson about freedom and agility in social media marketing.

Their approvals process, or lack of, means they can get posts up FAST. So they can respond to trends, engage with their community, and make an impact when it counts. They’re not waiting hours, or days, or let’s be honest, weeks for input from different teams, 100 edits, and eventual sign-off from management.

And the good news? If you’re a small brand, you’re in a great position to make your process as quick, easy, and responsive as possible.

Our advice:

Be bold and agile

Duolingo’s social team has the freedom to push boundaries and respond in real time. They don’t wait hours or days for endless approvals – they act fast, riding trends and engaging their community on the fly.

Authenticity over perfection

Even if a stunt ruffles some feathers, it sparks genuine conversation. When you’re authentic and timely, your audience will notice.

Adaptability is key

For small brands especially, having a streamlined process means you can be nimble and responsive. It’s not about mimicking big budget campaigns, it’s about making an impact when it counts.

That’s all for this week 👋

We’re all watching closely to see what DuoLingo has in store next – let’s just hope there are no further developments until we’ve published this update 🤞

In the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Was this a stroke of genius or a marketing misstep?

See you next week for another round-up of the latest in digital drama and marketing insights.
