Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee or stealing a quiet moment between meetings, this is your quick hit of all the news, trends, and must-dos to keep you ahead of the curve. From shiny new features on your favourite platforms to industry shifts you need to know about, here’s everything worth knowing about this week.

This week’s social media shake-ups

Instagram drops its own editing app: Edits 🎥

Instagram is throwing its hat in the editing ring with the launch of Edits – their very own editing app that’s giving major “watch out, CapCut” energy. And let’s be honest, the timing is chef’s kiss. With CapCut briefly vanishing from app stores during TikTok’s mini-ban drama, Meta swooped in like, “we’ve got you”.

According to Instagram boss Adam Mosseri, Edits isn’t here for the casual scrollers, but for the hardcore creators ready to level up their content game. Think editing for 10-minute videos, collaborative draft sharing, and an inspiration tab packed with trending audio and styles to fuel your creativity.

The app’s still in beta mode but Apple users can pre-order now, with an incomplete version dropping in February. Find out more here.

Guess who’s back, back again…

Yep, you guessed it – after a 12-hour ban TikTok is back in action for US users. Well…for now, at least. The 75-day pause on the sell-off bill has put the ban on hold, but like every on-again, off-again relationship, things are messy.

Here’s the TLDR version:

Despite being the one who suggested the ban in the first place, Trump is now riding in on a metaphorical white horse, promising to save TikTok and make loads of money for the US in the process. Ambitious, right?!

One thing we’ve loved about the whole sorry saga is the hilarious content it has inspired. We’ve had everything from cheeky Chinese spy jokes and TikTok “refugees”, to surprisingly wholesome moments that have seen US and Chinese citizens bonding and learning about each other’s lives.

Oh and let’s not forget the EU Tiktokers rallying together to fill the void without their US mates. Although let’s spare a thought for the content creators who jumped on the confessions trend….“we’re leaving TikTok so here’s my deepest, darkest TikTok secrets…”. All fun and games until the app comes back 12 hours later. Awkward.

Chaos? Yes. Entertaining? Absolutely. Stressful for social media managers? Extremely.

Marketing news

ChatGPT goes MIA

So, in case you missed, ChatGPT went offline yesterday and the world collectively lost it. Ok, maybe we’re being a tiny bit dramatic, but judging by the reactions online it’s clear that many of us have become very attached to our AI BFF.

Naturally, social media was on fire with people sharing their existential crises, productivity meltdowns, and memes galore.

Annnnnd while we’re talking about AI, did you see we ran an AI for Social Media workshop this week? It was a real hit (if we do say so ourselves) – find out more about it here [link to case study once up]

Blue Monday? Nah, it’s all about the penguins 🐧

This week, we all officially survived Blue Monday – allegedly the most miserable day of the year. But let’s be honest, was it made worse by endless brands reminding us just how miserable we’re supposed to feel? Probably.

Thankfully, the legends over at innocent decided to approach the day a little differently. Instead of adding to the doom and gloom, they focussed on the fact that it was also Penguin Awareness Day – because who can be miserable when penguins are involved?

By flooding our feeds with adorable penguin pics, innocent not only made us all smile, but they also stayed true to their cheeky, feel-good brand identity, up-holding their reputation for being the adorable jokers of the smoothie world.

The takeaway?

Ok that’s all for another week…catch you next time for weekly update number four!
