How to get the most out of ChatGPT | 2-minute read

Many social media pros and business owners are already leveraging AI to enhance their strategies. If you’re not- or just dipping your toes in- this guide is for you!

We’re breaking down how ChatGPT can amplify your online presence, keep your content aligned with your brand, and help you avoid generic outputs.

So, first things first, what is AI?

Artificial intelligence is all about machines that can stimulate human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognising patterns, and learning from data.

It’s a social media game-changer, helping with:

But remember, AI is a tool, not a replacement for human expertise. It supports creativity and decision-making but needs clear guidance. If your results feel flat, it’s likely due to meh prompts. Better prompts = better results.

Why prompting matters

AI outputs depend on the quality of your prompts. If you’re disappointed with generic responses, refine your prompts to match your brand’s tone, style, and goals.

Take this AI mishap as an example. Salmon fillets in a river, instead of live salmon, shows just how important clear prompting is! When working with AI like ChatGPT, being specific is everything. The better your instructions, the better the results and less surprises.

Here’s how you can nail it:

Be clear and direct

Always aim for clarity and simplicity in your prompts to get the best results from ChatGPT. Vague prompts let the AI wander, but specific instructions help it stay focused and deliver content that aligns with your needs.

For example, instead of “Describe our service,” try “Write a professional, inviting description of our service, focusing on ease of use and how it saves time for busy professionals.”

Define the audience and purpose

AI performs best when you clearly define the target audience and the action you want to inspire.

Take Monzo and Barclays as examples. Both are major banks but have completely different tones online. Monzo’s approach is fun and playful, while Barclays maintains a more traditional tone. If they each requested “5 social media ideas for a bank,” the results wouldn’t suit both. That’s why it’s crucial to specify your audience, tone, and purpose, ensuring the content aligns perfectly with your brand’s identity and goals.

Incorporate brand specific language

Incorporate brand-specific language to make AI outputs more tailored to your style. For instance, if your brand frequently uses phrases like “create killer content strategies,” (like us) include this in your prompts to guide the AI.

Example: “Write a conversational product description for our eco-friendly skincare line, using phrases like ‘clean beauty’ and ‘sustainably sourced ingredients.’”

You can also provide examples of writing styles or tones you admire. For instance, try: “Write a lighthearted Instagram caption for our fitness app, similar to this: ‘Get ready to love your workouts with us!’”

The best piece of advice we ever received

Like you, we’re always diving into the latest marketing trends. One standout moment? A webinar with AI expert Ross Simmonds, where he shared a gem: “Treat AI like the best junior colleague you’ve ever had.”

What does that mean? Question its logic, seek clarity, proofread thoroughly, and provide context to steer it in the right direction. Remember, you don’t have to settle for the first draft. Ask questions and refine until it works for you.

And don’t forget: AI isn’t perfect. Double-check everything, especially the facts (just ask the U.S. lawyer who got caught out using ChatGPT in court!).

What else can ChatGPT do?

AI isn’t just about saving time- it’s a powerhouse for sparking creativity! ChatGPT can help you brainstorm fresh ideas, discover new perspectives, and break through creative blocks, keeping your social media content dynamic and engaging.
