Social media evolves year after year and there’s no slowing it down. As technology advances, so does the way we connect online. Artificial intelligence is leading the way and social media and digital marketing are moving forward alongside it. So, what social media trends should we expect to see in 2018?
Instagram stories have over 200 million people using the feature each month, this is over 50 million more than Snapchat! This figure is expected to rise in 2018 as it has only been operating for just over one year! As Instagram add new features to the platform, such as the recent expressive GIF stickers and allowing users to upload images and videos of any size, it will attract more users to share via stories. Real time content is highly sought after by users and using stories for your business is a great way to keep your brand at the forefront of customer’s minds.
A chatbot is a computer programme that will interact with customers based on the data it is given. Many businesses are using these chatbots to increase positive customer experience as they can provide an instant response to a customer query. Over the past year, the use of chatbots is rising and there are already thousands active on Facebook Messenger. Chatbots can be customised to answer specific queries about businesses, so we can expect to see more companies jump on the chatbot trend throughout 2018.
Influencers continue to take over social media and in 2018 it is expected that businesses will pour more money into this form of marketing. Businesses will be focusing on building relationships with relevant influencers to promote their product or service to their audience. Younger generations are said to trust the opinions more of influencers over a ‘traditional’ celebrity.
Augmented reality and face filters
Social media platforms will continue to create and push face filters in 2018. Since the famous dog filter on Snapchat, taking pictures with a face filter has become a daily activity for most. As Instagram stories increases in popularity we should expect to see a huge variety of smarter face filters. With the newest feature on the iPhone X using augmented reality and facial recognition technology, it is likely Snapchat and Instagram will be creating filters for this feature.
Video hangouts are becoming more popular with the platform Houseparty having over one million users each day. This is a way for friend groups to come together online if they can’t see each other in person. It is likely these platforms will become more mainstream as video becomes increasingly popular. People like to see people. As Facebook always do, they will be jumping on this trend of group video chat and are currently working on Facebook Spaces, a virtual reality hangout app!
